The Bates Dance Festival
In 1982, Marcy Plavin, Professor of Dance Emeritus at Bates College, was approached by Hedley Reynolds about establishing a dance festival on campus as a way to use the gracious and largely vacant facilities during the summer months. With full College backing, she and Frank Wicks, a Maine resident and active member of the dance community, set about hiring the best teachers they could find. When the lineup was complete, notices were placed in Dance Magazine and other publications. For twenty-six years now, the Bates Dance Festival produces a 5-week contemporary dance and music performance series each July/August at Bates College; a 2-week Young Dancers Workshop (ages 13-17); the Youth Arts Program (a dance and music program for local children ages 6-17); community outreach events for people of all ages; and provides commissioning and creative time for contemporary choreographers from around the globe.
