Release of the 8th volume of “Half a Century of Japanese Theater” series contemporary Japanese plays in English translation
The “Half a Century of Japanese Theater” series of contemporary Japanese plays in English translation was begun in 1999 as a project under the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Arts Plan 21 program, and in April 2006, the eighth volume of the series was published.
This series brings together translations of works by the representative contemporary Japanese playwrights and the important plays of the postwar era and one edition of new translations is published each year. With each play’s translation there is also a recent photograph of the playwright, stage photos of productions of the play and a newly compiled profile of the playwright and his/her career.
The works in translation to be found in the newly published 8th edition and the series as a whole are listed below. You can also find a synopsis of most of these works in the “Japanese Contemporary Drama Database” of this website.
