9th Edition of the contemporary Japanese plays in English translation series “Half a Century of Japanese Theater”
In April 2007 the 9th Edition of the “Half a Century of Japanese Theater” series of Japanese plays in English translation that began in 1999 as a part of the Arts Plan 21 project of the Japanese government’s Agency of Cultural Affairs has been published.
This series covers the leading contemporary Japanese playwrights and the major plays of the postwar era and new editions are added once a year. Each edition includes a current picture of the playwrights, stage photographs of the works in performance and profiles of the playwrights (all newly written). This most recent 9th edition contains representative plays from the 1990s selected on the themes of “solitude” and “alienation” and comprises six works. They are early works of the popular figures of the “4th generation” of modern Japanese playwrights and later, including Hideo Tsuchida, Suzuki Matsuo, Keralino Sandorovich and other. Below is a list of all the works of the nine editions published to date. Synopses of some of these works can also be found on this website in the “Japanese Drama Database.”
