In 2008, the 1000th anniversary of the Tales of Genji, Yokohama Noh Theater presents “Tales of Genji – The Different Faces of Love” (Aug. 9 – Dec. 21)
This year marks the 1000th anniversary of the writing of the Tales of Genji, a work that is widely considered to be the world’s oldest full-length novel and has continued to have great influence in literature and art and as a subject of study by historians and artisans, not only in Japan but internationally as well. A variety of international events are taking place, such as the publishing of an extravagantly illustrated full French translation of the Tales of Genji. Also, an international forum is planned as part of the 1000th anniversary celebrations, which will gather Tales of Genji scholars in Kyoto in November.

Now, as part of celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of the Tales of Genji, a special program titled “Tales of Genji – The Different Faces of Love” that explores the lives and emotions of women in the Heian Period in which the novel was written is being held at the Yokohama Noh Theater, a theater known for its interesting programs aimed at spreading appreciation of the ancient arts. Among the Noh pieces to be performed this time are Hajitomi, in which the spirit Hikaru Genji’s lover, Yugao, dances while telling about her love with Genji, and Aoinoue, in which the jealous Rokujo Misundokoro turns into a ghost to haunt the object of her jealousy, Genji’ s wife, Aoinoue. This appealing series of five Noh performances exploring the essences of Japanese aesthetics will continue through the end of the year.

In addition to Noh plays, each performance will feature commentaries by the poetess Akiko Baba and recitations of Noh scripts by the former NHK announcer Sachiko Kagami.
