Winners of the 14th Yomiuri Theater Awards announced
 The results of the 14th Yomiuri Theater Awards sponsored by the Yomiuri Newspaper have been announced and the Grand Prix and the best actor award goes to Yasunori Danda for his acting in the Bunkamura production of Tango Fuyu no Owari ni (Tango at the End of Winter) and SIS Company production of Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf also received the award for best play. Danda also received the Asahi Drama Award this year for his acting in this and other plays, and SIS Company received the company award of the Kinokuniya Drama Awards. Shinobu Terajima received the best actress award for her portrayal of Natsuko Higuchi in the Nitosha production of Kaku Onna (A Writing Woman). Terajima was also a recipient of the Asahi Drama Award. The award for best director went to Kazuyoshi Kushida, who pioneered the new possibilities of contemporary theater directors directing Kabuki, providing audiences with easy-to-understand Kabuki productions and re-creating the atmosphere of Edo Period play houses. These efforts have included making a regular feature of the “Cocoon Kabuki” productions performed in a temporary theater facility created inside a department store in Shibuya (see Overview “New Wave Kabuki”).
Winners of these awards receive a bronze trophy and a cash prize of 2 million yen for the Grand Prix and 1 million for the other prizes.
The judges for the Yomiuri Theater Awards include Hotaru Okamoto, Toen Kitagawa, Yoko Kuki, Mizuo Kondo, Hironobu Nishikawa, Hitomi Hagio, Hiroshi Hasebe, Seiichi Yano, Tamotsu Watanabe.

Best Play award: SIS Company Inc. production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? (June 2006, Theatre Cocoon)

Best Actress award: Shinobu Terajima for role in the Nitosha production of Kaku Onna (A Writing Woman)

Best Director award: Kazuyoshi Kushida (Shochiku--Cocoon Kabuki production of Tokaido Yotsuya Kwaidan–Kitaban

Best Staff award: Shusaku Futamura (for stage design in the TPT production Chi no Konrei (Lorca’s “Blood Wedding”), the New National Theatre production Asia no Onna (Women of Asia) and the Bunkamura production of Shirano

Sugimura Haruko Award (for new talents): Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (for acting in the SIS Company production of Chichi Kaeru (Father Returns) and Okujo no Kyojin (Lunatic on the Roof)

Contribution to the Arts award: Kinji Obata, playwright
